The Importance and Concept of Diamonds
Diamonds have always carried a special sort of symbolism throughout history. Today, it really is mostly recognized for its significance in romance - which has a diamond ring being the key ring a man ever buys, and provide to the woman which he loves.
But well before that, loose diamonds had a very different sort of symbolism and meaning. For millennia, the traits of diamonds which have renedered them so valuable and thus treasured have been interpreted by different cultures in another way, and their strength, hardness, brilliance and wonder have signified various meanings.
In the past, the Greeks held the fact diamonds were the tears with the gods because of its physical properties that appeared to be out of this world. The Romans believed roughly the same, only rather than being the tears of the gods they believed that diamonds were fragments of fallen stars.
Halfway around the world from there, in ancient India diamonds were thought to have magical properties and were of explicit spiritual and mythological significance. Diamonds in India were never cut, since it was declared that if they were their powers would dissipate.
In Tibetan Buddhism, diamonds also play a huge role and in fact Tibetan Buddhism itself is actually called Vajrayana which loosely means the Diamond Vehicle, then one of their most significant texts is termed the Diamond Sutra.
Since those ancient times, several other myths and legends have sprung forth around diamonds too. In the center Ages, it had been thought that diamonds could tell whether somebody was innocent or guilty, knowning that a diamond would darken inside presence of guilt, and shine bright inside the presence of innocence.
This remarkable stone has also always been told bring luck and fortune to anybody who wears it, and in some cases warriors and Kings might wear it into battle, believing who's would bring them victory over their enemies.
As we discussed, the symbolism and meaning behind diamonds has varied throughout history.
Its modern meaning of romance and relationship only began in 1477 if the Archduke Maximilian of Austria gave a diamond ring to Mary of Burgundy for his or her engagement. Although before that there are actually cases of betrothal gifts that involve diamond jewelry for instance tiaras, brooches, and necklaces - this is the first case of your diamond ring being given upon an engagement.
Of course - the remaining is history.
Today, the value of loose diamonds in romance and engagement will be the predominant symbolism all over the world. It carries a special meaning, and possesses potent emotional significance, but that doesn't mean that it couldn't one day symbolize something quite different yet again.
Who knows exactly what the future holds to the symbolism and meaning of diamonds.
